South Central's Top 75 Contractors

Inaugural list highlights major players in four-state area

The south central region's largest contractors had nearly $5.4 billion in regional revenue and more than $10 billion in total revenue, according to data compiled by South Central Construction magazine.

In the magazine's inaugural Top 75 Contractors list, general contractors with a permanent office in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee are ranked by their 2004 regional revenue. In addition, breakout rankings arrange contractors by total revenue and type of construction.

The region's largest contractor - The Yates Companies Inc. of Philadelphia, Miss. - is also ranked as the largest building contractor, followed by Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Birmingham, Ala.; CDI Contractors of Little Rock, Ark.; R. J. Griffin & Co. of Atlanta, Ga.; and EMJ Corp. of Chattanooga, Tenn.

In the transportation market, Hill Bros. Construction & Engineering Co. Inc. of Falkner, Miss., tops the list, followed by The Yates Cos., Ray Bell Construction Co. Inc. of Brentwood, Tenn.; Gilbert Central Corp. of Little Rock, Ark.; and Wright Bros. Construction Co. Inc. of Charleston, Tenn.

Leading in the industrial market is The Yates Cos., followed by Nabholz Construction Corp. of Conway, Ark.; BE&K Construction Co. of Birmingham, Ala.; Turner-Universal Construction Co. of Brentwood, Tenn.; and Doster Construction Co. Inc. of Birmingham, Ala.

The public works market is lead by Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Birmingham, Ala.; followed by MAY Construction Co. Inc. of Little Rock, Ark; W. L. Hailey & Co. Inc. of Nashville, Tenn.; The Yates Cos.; and Max Foote Construction Co. Inc. of Birmingham, Ala.
